Posted Friday, February 27, 2026

We’re excited to welcome Jennifer Markiewicz as the new Operations Manager for Clinical Research at MWRI Erie.

And even more excited that she’s already a great friend and partner of HHF's.

Jennifer brings more than 25 years of nursing and leadership experience to her new role and a genuine heart for this community. A graduate of Gannon University, she was drawn to MWRI Erie by its commitment to advancing women’s health at every stage of life. “To be on the cusp of groundbreaking research is beyond exciting,” she shared. “I’m proud and humbled to help represent this work in Erie.”

Dr. Halina Zyczynski, Medical Director of MWRI Erie, shared, “We are thrilled to add Jenn to the MWRI Erie leadership team. She brings an exceptional nursing background in both pediatrics and adult med-surg, which enhances our research capabilities, particularly in interventional trials at the CTRC. Her lived experience on both sides of the research relationship makes her a wonderful role model and mentor for our staff.”

Jennifer hopes to be a catalyst for greater local awareness and community support, driven by the notion that “when women’s health is prioritized, our community thrives.”

Currently, MWRI Erie has seven active studies enrolling local participants to advance the study of women’s health:

  • MOMI Biobank – building a data repository to fuel current and future students related to pregnancy and infant outcomes
  • EVeryMom Study – in partnership with Penn State Behrend, examines relationship between previous trauma and extracellular vesicles
  • Aspirin Study – study on dose and prevention of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy
  • Endometriosis study – aims to better diagnose and treat this and other benign conditions
  • IMPACT – examines attitudes and preferences on contraceptive choices in the substance use population
  • HOPE – focuses on the effects of opioids and other substances on the placenta during pregnancy
  • EXAMIN Study – launches this spring and focuses on substance exposure in pregnancy

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Jennifer is no stranger to HHF. She and her husband partnered with us to host Friendsgiving in November. The fundraiser supported the Child Life program at UPMC Hamot and reflected the Markiewicz's long-standing commitment to giving back and supporting families in our region.

We are thrilled to have Jennifer on the MWRI Erie team and grateful for the leadership, compassion, and community spirit she brings to this important work.
