Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI)

MWRI is making groundbreaking discoveries every day—in the fields of cancer, heart disease, fertility, pelvic disorders, pregnancy and more.

The potential is endless, and anything is possible when the country’s largest women’s research institute partners with a world-class women’s hospital, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital.

With more than 300 world-class scientists and staff working in more than 30 areas of research, MWRI is the largest independent U.S. research institute focused solely on women’s health research and reproductive biology.

In 2019, Hamot Health Foundation received a historic $6 million grant award from the Erie Community Foundation as part of a $26 million funding stack to establish the Magee-Womens Research Institute Erie. Soon after, Magee-Womens Research Institute in Erie opened its Obstetric Specimen Processing Unit along with a Clinical Translational Research Center, enabling Erie investigators and patients to connect with Pittsburgh researchers.

The expansion of the Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI) to Erie marks a major milestone in the growth of medical research at UPMC Hamot — bringing nationally recognized expertise in women’s health, reproductive biology, and neonatal care directly into our community.

Research Topics and Initiatives

Topics and initiatives include the Magee Obstetric Maternal and Infant (MOMI) Biobank, cognitive impairment, obesity, heart health, blood testing for pregnancy complications, the microbiome, pelvic prolapse, incontinence, postpartum care, and more.

Erie research operations are poised to support investigators' study of rural health disparities, a key initiative of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities.

Erie’s generational stability provides MWRI investigators access to grandmothers, mothers and daughters for epigenetic and genomic studies that will advance women’s health breakthroughs.

Led by medical director Halina Zyczynski, MD, and Manager of Outpatient Clinical Research, Jennifer Markiewicz, MWRI in Erie is fully committed to the vision of a robust, diverse research community.
